Italy (official name in Italian: Repubblica Italiana - Italian Republic) is a country in Europe.
It is located south of the Alps, on the Apennine Peninsula. It includes the two largest islands in the Mediterranean - Sicily and Sardinia, and much smaller in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. Its area is 301 338 km², [4] of which 7200 km² is water area. [5]
Italy is a member of the European Union and the Eurozone and is part of the Schengen area.
Rome has been the capital of Italy since 1870. Before it, the capitals of the Kingdom of Italy were Turin and Florence.
