The Republic of Albania is a country in southern Europe.
Albania's borders are with Montenegro to the north, Kosovo to the northeast, northern Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south. It has access to the Adriatic Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the southwest. Its area is 29,176 km², of which 27,805 km² is land and 1,371 km² is water area.
Today's Albania in ancient times was the northern part of Epirus, and later part of the Roman province (province) of New Epirus was located there. The term "Albanian" first appeared in the second century. Later, this term began to appear more and more often in the chronicles of Roman historians. After being part of Bulgaria in the IX-XIII centuries and briefly in the Roman and Serbian states, the Albanian lands were conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1478.
On November 28, 1912, Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire and became a constitutional monarchy. With the beginning of the First World War, the territory of the country was occupied by Serbia, Greece and Italy, and then by troops of Austria-Hungary and France. Remained under foreign occupation until 1920.
