The Republic of Cape Verde, also known as Green horn, is an island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa with an area of 4033 km² and a population of 539,560.
The archipelago includes the islands of Santiago, Sao Nicolau, Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Boa Vista, Fogo, Mayo, Sal and Brava.
The capital of the country is Praia and is located on the largest island - Sao Tiago. The official language of the republic is Portuguese. Creole and local African languages are also spoken in the country.
The islands were uninhabited until they were discovered by the Portuguese Antonio Fernandes in 1445. Portugal turned them into its colony and populated them with African slaves and Portuguese peasants. The islands have long been a center of the slave trade for America. Until 1869 (the opening of the Suez Canal), the archipelago served as an important point for ships traveling from America and Europe to Asia. In 1974, the Portuguese government granted him independence.
